The Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association, in conjunction with Trane, a brand of Ingersoll Rand, presented Mary Jean Anderson of Anderson Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc., of El Cajon, California, with the “PHCC HVAC Contractor of the Year Award.” Anderson was recognized for excellence in the HVACR industry, including professionalism, innovative practices and community service.

For example, she regards ongoing, affordable training and education for contractors as crucial to the health of the industry. Over the past four years, Anderson has provided 100 percent of funds for the company apprentices’ tuition and training.

A PHCC member for more than 30 years, the company is regarded as a valuable commercial and technical resource in the community. Anderson has offered guidance as a board member for the Better Business Bureau and the company has been called upon to advise the city attorney of San Diego, California.

The people of Anderson Plumbing are also committed to their community. Employees work with Rebuilding Together, as well as the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation, the Jerry Lewis muscular dystrophy telethon, a therapeutic riding center and other charitable groups. To raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research, Anderson sponsors “Find a Cure Friday,” in which a donation is made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for every appointment booked on a Friday.

As the nomination form states: “[Mary Jean] Anderson is a model business owner, constantly providing leadership and commitment to the community and the industry. … [Her] success in an industry dominated by men has been chronicled in plumbing, heating and air conditioning trade journals. She serves as an inspiration to other women in the industry.”

In order to be named the PHCC “HVAC Contractor of the Year,” candidates must complete an application form and supply one or more references. Each nomination is evaluated by a committee of PHCC members who judge accomplishments in six areas: professionalism, merchandising skills, management skills, innovative HVAC practices, trade involvement and community service. The winner is honored at the association’s annual meeting and receives a check for $2,500, as well as a commemorative plaque.
