EASTON, Pa. — Victaulic announced they are prepared to help customers comply with the Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act set to be implemented on Jan. 4, 2014. All Victaulic products for use in potable (drinking) water applications are currently NSF 61 certified and have been confirmed to meet the new low-lead requirements of the act via the NSF 372 Standard.
“As a result of Victaulic’s involvement in global drinking water standards and product compliance, we have a direct influence on the quality of drinking water system components in our markets,” said Michael Erle, product certification specialist at Victaulic. “We fully support the development and adoption of such initiatives as the NSF 372 lead reduction program.”
The Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act is a federal law that amends the Safe Drinking Water Act, to set new, lower standards for the amount of lead permissible in plumbing products that come into contact with potable water. The SDWA was first passed in 1974 to set minimum requirements for drinking water quality and safety. It is implemented by the Environmental Protection Agency and enforced primarily by individual states.
The Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act amendment will change the definition of “Lead Free” to equal no more than a weighted average of 0.25 percent lead when used with respect to the wetted surfaces of pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings and fixtures. The new regulations do not impact materials used for nonpotable services such as irrigation, outdoor water, toilets and the like. Products that meet this low lead standard will be referred to in the law as “Lead Free.”
